New Grand Junction Community Center

The construction of a new community center in Grand Junction passed another benchmark Monday. The city council accepted the low bid of $1,128,700 from Jensen Builders of Fort Dodge for construction. Weather permitting, construction will start within the next month. Completion is expected for late January.

The total project cost was estimated at $1,158,736. According to Diane Wise, who has worked the past 18 months raising money for the community center, the committee is still working to raise $30,000 to $55,000 for furnishings.

Two other contractors bid on the project.

The project received a large challenge grant from Junction Hilltop Wind with the potential for $300,000, and a $220,000 Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) grant from the Vision Iowa board. The Grand Junction city council anticipates a $200,000 bond issue for the project, and the Greene County board of supervisors approved $15,000 in Dreyfus funds over three years. The remaining funds have come from a variety of community fundraisers including an auction, a bags tournament, a Glow Run 5K, a vendor fair, a Halloween party with a live band, a gofundme.com website and more.
